A detour of duty
Cascade Head has been a source of fun and frustration since I moved to Oregon.
What’s the buzz?
This is the story of a very popular Lincoln City art project, started quietly by someone who saw potential in a rather lofty tree stump, and the receptive city department that ran with her idea to turn it into art.
Don’t hang around too long
The bidding has begun, but you can still bring home a banner created by one of 36 Oregon Coast artists.
Who you gonna call?
Recent breast cancer survivors Sonia Graham and Jeanette Campagna decided to create something good out of something bad by launching a fund-raiser to help breast cancer patients in their own community.
A really grade performance
Some of the most talented music teachers on the Oregon Coast will demonstrate their skills at a “Piano Extravaganza” this Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
Catch on fast this fall
October is the perfect time to fall into learning as the Oregon Coast Community College returns to providing in-person opportunities to learn from some of the coast’s most interesting locals and guest lecturers.
See the hear-nos of the silver screen
It’s not easy to be a silent movie fan. Poor storage techniques and a fire that devastated the silent film archives of two major studios in the 1930s have contributed to the sad fact that only about a quarter of the original films made remain.
Downward facing… goat?
What do you imagine when seeing “goat” and “yoga” strung together into one, presumably rational phrase?
Dave’s Detours: Amanda’s Trail
This is a detour into time and history rather than spaces along the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT). I hope this diversion increases your wonder at what is constantly around us.
If you build it, they will camp
When you build an amphitheater, it’s only natural to want to show it off. And B’nai B’rith Camp in Lincoln City will do just that when renowned pianist Michael Allen Harrison and his All-Star Band headline a BBQ and concert on Sunday, Sept. 26.
Thumbs up or thumbs down?
You might hike a nature trail for fitness, to give your canine companion new places to sniff or to get that perfect, Instagram-worthy shot. And you might not even think about what it takes to keep those places accessible and maintained.
Thanks (and tanks)
While pandemic precautions have prompted some changes in the Celebration of Honor at Lincoln City’s Chinook Winds Casino Resort, the show will go on. The comedy show that is.
Find your way to Newport
You’ll be on the edge of your seat at the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center’s new exhibit, “Finding Our Way: Navigating Life at the Edge” opening on Friday, Sept. 17, in the main gallery.
This show has layers
Capturing the whimsy and wonder of the natural world binds the three featured artists in the September Show from Manzanita’s Hoffman Gallery: painters Matthew Dennison and Lena Lenček and clay sculptor Serafine Lilien.
Bid the cold goodbye
Show some love for the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild and possibly score something handmade by one of these award-winning quilters at the group’s online auction, happening until Sunday, Sept. 26.
On track for fall
With its train cars slowly rocking back and forth past views of the ocean, lakes and Tillamook Bay, a vintage diesel locomotive makes its way along the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad.
Dave’s Detours: Oceanside
Although new Oregon Coast Trail (OCT) maps were released this spring, last fall’s wind storm necessitates more hiking on roads as several trails (like the North Trail at Cape Lookout) will not reopen until 2023. I am using that as an excuse for more detours. Last year near Oceanside I had one detour — this year I have two.
Simply st-ella
Oregon Coast Community College is the home of the OCCC Sharks, but on campus this fall, everyone seems focused on salmon.
A bow-ling league with a difference
Lincoln City Archery will launch its first ever Lincoln City Archers League on Monday, Sept. 20. The League will meet for 10 Mondays at the range for camaraderie, fun and games.
Learn from a seasoned professional
Fall is a time of warm and vibrant colors and unusual patterns on leaves. The visual arts workshop “Botanical Drawing – Fall Foliage” on offer from Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts this Saturday, Sept. 11, will focus on capturing the changing colors and patterns of the season.
